From July 21 to 23, the International College at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) organized a study tour titled “Experience China · Journey in Jiangxi”. Bringing together international students from over ten countries, the program took participants to Nanchang and Jinggangshan for hands-on learning about China’s historical evolution, local culture, and contemporary development.
Blending field visits with thematic discussions, the three-day program encouraged students to explore key stages in China's historical development. Through on-site observation and interactive learning, participants deepened their understanding of the country’s cultural legacy and social progress.
To prepare students for the field experience, the International College held a pre-trip orientation session. The briefing covered Jiangxi’s unique geography and culture, major trends in China’s modern development, the historical significance of Jinggangshan, and USTC’s founding mission in support of national scientific advancement. By exploring China's cultural heritage, modern history, and contemporary scientific achievements, students built a solid knowledge foundation for their upcoming fieldwork.
On July 21, students visited the Nanchang August 1st Memorial Hall and Jiangxi Provincial Museum. Guided by detailed exhibits and professional explanations, they learned about the historical significance of the founding of the People's Army, while gaining a holistic perspective on Jiangxi’s rich cultural heritage and long-term regional growth.
On July 22 and 23, the group traveled to Jinggangshan, a landmark site of historical and cultural significance in Jiangxi. At Jinggangshan Revolutionary Museum, students learned about the trials and efforts behind China's exploration of its own development path. They also toured former residences of historical figures in Ciping, where the modest living and working environments offered a firsthand look at the dedication and perseverance of earlier pioneers who strived for national advancement.
At the Huangyangjie Historic Site, students reflected on the resilience, determination, and dedication demonstrated throughout local historical events. Overlooking the natural landscapes of Wulongtan Scenic Area, they witnessed Jiangxi’s remarkable progress in ecological preservation and green development, experiencing the vibrant, sustainable transformation of this historic mountainous region.
The study tour created a meaningful dialogue between historical heritage and USTC’s educational philosophy. The perseverance, innovative mindset, and people-centered values embodied in Jinggangshan’s history align closely with USTC’s enduring mission to serve national strategic development and advance scientific and technological innovation.
By connecting historical context with modern-day development, international students acquired a well-rounded view of China’s contemporary history, development path, and social governance. As an integral part of the China Scholarship Council’s official “Experience China” initiative, the program empowers international students to form authentic, grounded impressions of China through direct and on-the-ground experience.
Moving forward, the International College will continue to enhance its experiential education programs for international students. By diversifying practical learning activities and building inclusive platforms for cross-cultural exchange, the college aims to help international students gain a comprehensive, dynamic, and authentic understanding of China.
