Visa & Resident Permit

· Long-Term Study Visa (X1-Visa)

Issued to those intending to study in China for a period of more than 180 days.

Required Materials:

1. Original passport valid for at least 6 months, with 2 or more blank visa pages.

2. Photocopy of the information page and extension page (if applicable) of the passport.

3. One fully completed Visa Application Form with 2 recently-taken color passport photos (full face, front view, and bare head, against a light background) attached.

4. Original and photocopy of Admission Notice issued by a school or other entity in China.

5. Original and photocopy of “Visa Application for Study in China” (Form JW201 or Form JW202) issued by Chinese relevant authorities.

For applicant under 18 years old, the following supplementary documents are required:

1. Photocopy of the unabridged birth certificate of the applicant.

2. Photocopy of the parents’ passports or ID cards.

3.The Affidavit from non-accompanying parent(s) authorizing the travel (Parental Letter of Consent). This affidavit should contain the dates of travel and the parents contact information.

· Short-Term Study Visa (X2-Visa)

Required Materials
1. Original passport valid for at least 6 months, with 2 or more blank visa pages.

2. Photocopy of the information page and extension page (if applicable) of the passport.

3. One fully completed Visa Application Form with 2 recently-taken color passport photos (full face, front view, and bare head, against a light background) attached.

4. Original and photocopy of Admission Notice issued by a school or other entities in China.

· Residence Permit

Please note: X1 visa holders must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entering China. The X1 visa issued by the diplomatic missions outside of China is only for single entry and valid for 30 days after entrance. Student should apply for a residence permit for study within 30 days after entrance. A student holding a valid student residence permit has multiple entries before it expires and does not have to apply for another visa to re-enter China.

Please come to International Students Office to apply for an official letter for residence permit and below are the required documents:

1. Passport

2. Admission Notice

3. JW201/JW202 form

4. Health certificate

5. Accommodation Registration Form stamped by local police station

6. One photo (passport size)

International Students Office will provide an official letter and other documents for students to apply for residence permit. You need take all the documents mentioned above to the Hefei Municipal Administration Bureau of Exit & Entrance in person. You will get a receipt (A4 size) after submitting all the documents including your passport to the officer. Please well keep this receipt because it serves as the proof of your identity in replace of your passport. Please take this receipt to get back your passport with residence permit stuck on it at the time written on the receipt (usually about one month).

If you need leave Hefei for another Chinese city during this period, please take this receipt to the Hefei Municipal Administration Bureau of Exit & Entrance and get it stamped. Then you can easily use this receipt in buying train ticket and checking in a hotel.

4. Fees: fees for residence permit application are different according to the period of validity of the residence permit. Expenses incurred in the procedures above shall be borne by the students themselves including scholarship students.

Accommodation Registration

According to the law, all foreigners must do Accommodation Registration in the police station within 24 hours after their arrival at Hefei.

Students living on campus please fill out the related form at USTC during your registration and then go to the designated police station with your passport.

(1) East Campus: Wuhu Road Police Station, Tel: 0551-62872328, Address: Inside the Tie Si Ju Community, Taihu Road, Baohe District (the Wuhu Road Police Station has an office in Building 230, East Campus of the University of Science and Technology, and provides services every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday)

(2) North Campus: San Lian Police Station,Tel: 0551-62693578, Address: No. 248, Jixi Road, Shushan District

If you need to live in hotels temporarily, please make sure hotel receptionist register your accommodation for you.

Students living off-campus should take the passport to the police station for accommodation registration with the landlord in 24 hours after signing rental agreement and moving into the apartment. Also please let us know your detailed address for contact.

Please keep the authorized Accommodation Registration Form carefully and give one photocopy to International Students Office, as it is one of the most important documents for applying for Residence Permit. Moreover, you need to renew it in the police station if you have moved to another place or received a new passport.
