求学序章My Journey to USTC
“I am Mahmoud A. Khalifa from Egypt, PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Chunye Xu at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). I am also an Assistant Lecturer at Physics Department, Faculty of Science, Mansoura University, Egypt. I got my bachelor's degree with “Excellent with honor degree” (90.22% - Ranked First) from the Faculty of Science, Mansoura University, Egypt. I obtained my master's degree in Experimental physics. Then, I came to China in September 2018 with my Egyptian friends and started my enjoyable journey at USTC...”
Mahmoud A. Khalifa来自非洲一个古老而神秘的国度——埃及。他于2018年9月来到中国科学技术大学,在此攻读材料科学与工程的博士学位。
Khalifa与科大的故事很早就埋下了伏笔。彼时,他以优异成绩从埃及知名学府曼苏拉大学毕业,获得硕士学位。已经拥有较为丰富的研究经历的他仍然求知若渴,打算留学海外攻读博士。在网上查找资料时,他对中国科学技术大学产生了浓厚的兴趣。中国科大不仅在中国是名列前茅的大学,也在世界享有极高的声誉。而在他热爱的材料领域,科大有着一群优秀的学者教授,在全球顶尖期刊发表了许多科研论文,做出了世界前沿的创新成果,这蜚声中外的科研实力让他心生向往。此外,经朋友介绍,他还了解到中国科学院与发展中国家科学院院长奖学金计划。于是,Khalifa毫不犹豫地选择了中国科大,在这里开始了他的博士研究生之旅。
行在路上My study life at USTC
“In general, USTC and international college organize and manage classes, activities, and events very well as professionals. Studying materials, class environment, and schedule are very perfect. I did not face any difficulties in the organization of study at USTC. The difficulties were and still are in scientific research such as high novelty ideas, repetition of many experiments, scientific writing, publishing process, revising so many times, etc……”
科学的高峰是险峻的,但攀登高峰的人也是勇敢而值得尊敬的。Khalifa很满意科大舒适的学习环境和高标准的教学科研设备,但作为一名博士研究生,他也不可避免地面临着科研上的挑战和压力。如何打破常规提出创新点、如何耐住性子一遍遍地重复实验过程,如何提升论文写作水平、如何在反反复复的修改中打磨出最好的论文……这些烦恼,都给他带来了挫折、焦虑、不安的情绪。前段时间,受到疫情影响,Khalifa的实验工作不得不中断了6个月,这让他更加担忧,只能在耐心和希望中默默等待转机。
幸运的是,Khalifa不是孤军奋战。导师徐春叶教授的悉心教导、家人朋友的温馨关怀、老师同学的热情鼓励,都给了他莫大的心理支持和安慰。“我所取得的学术成就,都离不开导师的鼓励与指导以及团队的互帮互助,”他这样说到,“此外,善于自我激励、专注目标、不断探索、对学习保持勇气和热情、坚持学习以不断提高自身的能力和视野,对我来说也十分重要。”
正是在Khalifa自身努力和师友的多方支持下,他取得了令人满意的成绩,分别在SCI期刊Advanced Materials Interfaces,Solar Energy,以及RSC Advances发表了论文,其中一篇题为“Partly Covered PProDOT-Me2 on MoS2 Nanosheets Counter Electrode for High-Performance Self-Powered Electrochromic Device”的一作论文被选为Advanced Materials Interfaces的底封,于2022年1月发表。

放眼未来My Future Plan with USTC
“I have learned huge knowledge and skills at USTC. I will return to Egypt so that knowledge transfer will happen and I can benefit my home country. I’ll recommend and support the new generation of students to study at USTC. My scholarship will be just a start for collaboration between USTC and my home university, Mansoura University. I will maintain the collaboration with USTC, as it provides several programs of international cooperation and exchange. I am also interested in entrepreneurial research that explores the pathways of commercializing technology, which is very important to our society.”
前行不易,心怀感恩。在科研路途上艰难跋涉的过程中,他感谢一路相伴的老师、同学、朋友、家人,也感谢中国科学技术大学和中国科学院奖学金的支持。正因为在留学期间收获了如此多的帮助和支持,Khalifa想将这种积极向学的能量传播给更多人,用个人的力量点亮他人前行的光芒。
科学无疆域,交流无国界。Khalifa打算在毕业后回到祖国埃及,发挥个人所长,贡献自己在科大学到的知识,造福祖国的社会发展。他期待着成为中国-埃及之间学术交流的先行者,想要为中国科大和母校曼苏拉大学搭建合作的桥梁,让埃及有更多的青年学子能够来到中国科大学习和生活。
未来并不遥远,他已行在路上,把留学科大的故事讲给更多人听,让留学中国的故事在世界的另一端回响,让中国-埃及之间的合作交流共筑两国光明的未来。
