Seasons of Change: A Decade in China, A Lifetime of USTC Memories by Arif Ullah
Time:2025-06-30,AM 10:11

After spending a decade in China, when I look back on my journey, my alma mater—the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)—stands as the most defining chapter of my life. Those four and a half years not only shaped my career but also left me with unforgettable memories, deeply intertwined with the changing seasons of that beautiful campus.

My USTC story began in 2014. After graduating from Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan's top-tier institution, I was searching for the best place to pursue advanced studies. At that time, few from my country considered China for PhD studies—most looked toward the West. However, a friend who had studied in China encouraged me to apply. I submitted my application for the CAS-TWAS fellowship through USTC. Months later, an unexpected email arrived: an admission notice. That moment marked the beginning of a transformative journey.

On September 1, 2015, I arrived in China and was warmly greeted by USTC representatives. The International Office ensured a smooth transition, providing comfortable accommodation at the Institute of Advanced Technology (IAT), access to healthcare, and even Halal food options in the canteens. The kindness of teachers like Ms. Nancy and Ms. Zhang during our Chinese language classes made my initial days even more welcoming.

As my academic path unfolded, I moved to USTC's East Campus and joined the esteemed research group of Professor Yijing Yan, under the mentorship of Professor Xiao Zheng. My PhD group is one of the top research teams in the field of open quantum systems, and my research flourished in this intellectually stimulating environment. Throughout my PhD, whenever I faced challenges, I found unwavering support from my professors, lab mates, and the International College. The vibrant cultural exchange—through events like International Cultural Day and sports activities—introduced me to friends from around the world, enriching my experience far beyond academics.

USTC's natural beauty was a constant companion through every season. Spring brought enchanting cherry blossoms, transforming the campus into a floral paradise. The serene lake offered a peaceful retreat from research pressures. Autumn draped the university in golden hues, turning every walkway into a picturesque path. And then came winter—when snow blanketed the campus in a mesmerizing wonderland, adding magic to daily life.

Beyond academics and scenic beauty, USTC gifted me something even more precious—I met my soulmate here. Our journey together, which began at USTC, led to a joyful marriage and the blessing of our now two-year-old son.

Today, as an Assistant Professor at Anhui University, I look back with immense gratitude. USTC was not just a university; it was a home, a mentor, and a place where the seasons of change shaped the most meaningful chapters of my life.

Forever grateful. Forever a USTCer.
