Zhou Shaohua

Dr. S. Kevin Zhou is a professor and doctoral supervisor at USTC, also the executive dean of the School and the director of the Medical Imaging Intelligence and Robotics Research Center. He is dedicated to the research innovation, application and academic service of medical imaging.


Research innovation:

In the field of medical imaging, Dr. Zhou has pioneered the systematic research of “machine learning plus knowledge modeling”, and recently clarified the research paradigm and challenges of “big task, small data”, and explored the three major solutions of high efficient marking, common model, and knowledge fusion. He has published more than 250 academic papers and chapters. The total number of citations in Google Scholar is over 11,000 and the H-index is 56. He has edited eight academic books.



Dr. Zhou has worked in the industry for 14 years and served as the senior R&D director and chief AI expert of Siemens. More than 140 authorized patents have been granted, and his algorithm has been successfully transferred to more than 10 FDA-approved products. The products are used in thousands of hospitals around the world for clinical treatment and diagnosis of more than 7 million patients.


Academic service:

Dr. Zhou is the treasurer and director of MICCAI, advisor of Medical Open Network for AI (MONAI), editorial board member of top journals like Medical Imaging Analysis, IEEE Trans. Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TPAMI), IEEE Trans. Medical Imaging (TMI), Chairman of top conferences such as AAAI, CVPR, ICCV, MICCAI and NeurIPS, Co-Chair of MICCAI2020, and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the WeChat official account Explorer for Vision. He has received numerous recognitions and awards for his algorithms, papers, patents, and services, including nominated articles for MICCAI Young Scientist Award, R&D 100 Awards, Siemens Inventor of the Year, University of Maryland EE Distinguished Alumni Award, BMEF Editor of the Year, Fellow of IEEE, AIMBE, NAI, etc.
