A Journey of Discovery: From India to USTC—My Decade as a Chinese Scholar by Vithiyapathy Purushothaman

As an Indian-based Chinese scholar since 2014, visiting China was a dream that became reality in 2017. The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in New Delhi organized a 10-day think-tank researcher delegation visit to Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. That visit opened a new gateway, providing me with a broader and more visionary understanding of China.

Later that same year, I joined my PhD program at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei through an exchange program between India's Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I initially stayed at the Institute of Advanced Technology (IAT), where I spent three months learning Chinese. Moving to the North Campus and USTC accommodations, as well as engaging in research activities under Professor Song Wei, widened my horizons of opportunity. Complementing these endeavors were invitations to present at prestigious national and international academic forums across China, as well as recurring guest lectures in Professor Song Wei's courses. These platforms facilitated intellectual exchange with scholars, researchers, and experts from universities nationwide. Concurrently, engagements at conferences, symposia, and field visits deepened interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration—opportunities that represent rare professional milestones in any academic trajectory.

I extend profound gratitude to Mr. Li Bijian, then-serving Minister Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in India (2017), whose encouragement and endorsement of my application for the Chinese Government Scholarship proved pivotal. This scholarship provided sustained financial support, which was critical to completing my doctoral studies. I also acknowledge the China Scholarship Council (CSC) for its continued support in maintaining my research momentum throughout 2022.

Many cultural events organized by the International College (ISO) of USTC provided excellent opportunities for round-the-clock participation. Numerous programs and cultural activities not only offered a chance to learn about Chinese culture but also to exchange practices with students from all over the world at USTC. The annual Cultural and Sports Events are unforgettable for any USTCer.

Among many activities, one regular practice close to my heart was martial arts, where I earned a Black Belt in Double Ninja and had the opportunity to perform on stage, leading the group.

From cultural activities that showcased rural, urban, and modern China to academic events featuring numerous opportunities to present, participate, and lecture—my educational journey at USTC provided me with experiences that enriched my perspective of China. Cultural and academic visits to Henan and Yunnan, as well as participation in extracurricular ISO activities, deepened my understanding of the country. Thus, my PhD opportunity at USTC enlightened my preliminary observation of China.

In a word, it was a marvelous journey filled with countless lessons and memories to cherish for a lifetime. The annual evaluation and credit system at USTC exemplifies rigorous academic scrutiny, fostering continuous growth. My heartfelt appreciation extends to the CSC and USTC for bestowing upon me the USTC Outstanding International Student Award for Academic Excellence (2020), the Chinese Government Excellent International Student Scholarship (2020), and the Best Activity Participation Award (2021). These accolades, symbolizing exceptional recognition in China's academic sphere, have invigorated my scholarly resolve. Special acknowledgement is owed to Professor Song Wei, whose mentorship and dedication to nurturing global talent have profoundly shaped my academic journey. I am also equally indebted to Professor Shi Yunli (石云里), Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at USTC.

The recognition of my hard work and dedication enabled me to maintain a steady pace of academic research, resulting in the publication of two books, journal papers, and articles during my PhD. Gratitude is due to the faculty and administrators of USTC's School of Humanities and Social Sciences and School of Public Affairs for their unwavering guidance. Ms. Zhang Chen merits commendation for her meticulous support in submitting my dissertation. At the same time, Mr. Jiang Rui, Mr. Yuan Zhenqing, and Mr. Yan Wu provided indispensable assistance during all phases of the thesis viva process. My Chinese co-researcher at USTC's workstation also deserves recognition for their collaborative spirit.

My heartfelt thanks go to Ms. Penny, my inaugural Chinese language mentor and counselor. I express boundless gratitude for her moral and academic guidance. Professor Song Xiaorong, my Panorama of China instructor, is thanked for her cultural insights and the familial warmth she shared during festival celebrations. My most profound appreciation goes to my spouse—whom I married during my PhD—and my daughter, who was born in Hefei, for their unwavering support throughout my doctoral journey.

Thank you to all the USTC teachers who provided me with countless opportunities in both cultural and academic endeavors and recognized me with many prizes and awards. I love you, USTC. As every USTCer says, USTC will remain in my heart forever.
