Visiting Student Program (Courses Study)

I. Introduction

University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) provides international students with the opportunity to apply for taking specialized courses in their respective major. International students can come to USTC as a General Scholar or a Senior Scholar depending on the level of major and applicant’s qualification. General Scholar can take courses at undergraduate’s level and master’s level, while Senior Scholar can take courses at doctoral level.

III. Duration

● 1 semester / 1 year

● The autumn semester usually runs from September to next January, the spring semester from February to June. 

IV. Transcript and Certificate

Upon completion of the courses, students who meet the assessment requirements will be issued with a transcript and a certificate. Students who are absent for more than a quarter of the total classes will not get the certificate. 

V. Fees and Payment

Tuition: 13,000RMB(≈1895USD) per semester, 26,000RMB(≈3790USD) per academic year 

Insurance: 400RMB(≈58USD) per semester; 800RMB (≈116USD) per academic year

International student dormitory: 500-1,000RMB (≈73—146USD) per month depending on room type and size

Payment: After the admission is confirmed, we will inform the admitted applicants to pay the pre-registration fee of 2,000RMB(≈312USD) through online payment, and send them the admission materials. Students should pay the remaining fees in RMB cash or by card when they arrive at the school on the day of registration.

Refund: The pre-registration fee is non-refundable. After registration, all fees are non-refundable.

VI. Scholarship

USTC offers scholarships to outstanding students. All applicants will be evaluated.

Level A

VII. Application Period

Applicants who apply for USTC Fellowwship Level A are required to complete application procedures online during the following period:

Jan.1 — Mar.31 (for fall semester)

July1 — Sept.30 (for spring semester)

Applicants who apply for USTC Fellowwship Level B, Level C or support by themselves are required to complete application procedures online during the following period:

Mar.1 — May 31 (for fall semester)

Sept.1 — Nov.30 (for spring semester)


VIII. Eligibility

1. Non-Chinese citizens with a valid foreign passport

2. Between 18-50 years old

3. In good mental and physical health

4. High school diploma or above

5. Applicants who choose Chinese-taught courses must be native speakers or have HSK5 certificate or above

X. Visa, Insurance, Food and Accommodation

1. Visa

The admitted students should submit the Visa Application Form (JW202) and the admission notice to the Chinese Embassy or consulate to apply for a Chinese Student Visa. Students must enter the country with a Student Visa and ensure that the Visa is valid during their stay in China.

2. Insurance

International students are required to purchase insurance in accordance with state regulations and school policies. Students pay the insurance fee, and USTC is responsible for purchasing the insurance.

3. Food

Students can use the student card in the campus canteen, as well as library and gym.

4. Accommodation

USTC Fellowship Level A/Level B students are offered on-campus accommodation on a first-come, first-served basis. If on-campus accommodation is full, students are required to find off-campus accommodation on their own. 

USTC Fellowship Level C/self-financed students need to find off-campus accommodation on their own but we will provide assistance to find housing. 

International students who live off campus shall register with the local police station in time. Full address and telephone number of the residence must be submitted at the time of registration.
